One of the best rules applied in Al-Ishlah is that it prioritizes the language use. No students are allowed to speak their local language such as Javanese and Sundanese. Instead, they have to speak Bahasa Indonesia. It is a must. Students who break the rule (speaking Javanese, for instance) will be punished.
Additionally, the use of English and Arabic is highly preferrable. In every other week, the area of the pesantren turns to be an English zone where people, including the teachers, must use only English as the daily language.
This strict rule has been applied for many years.
Recently, the pesantren has recorded one of its best achievements by having its student Laili Purnama Sari win a Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (MTQ) in Jember East Java and bring home a gold medal.
Having been abroad, Muhammad Dawam Saleh, the director of the pesantren, has encouraged students to apply English and Arabic in daily communication. What a very dynamic pesantren!
