Pondok Pesantren Karang Asem

Located in the village of Paciran, Pondok Pesantren Karang Asem is one of the best Islamic boarding schools in Lamongan. It lays in the center of Paciran, next to Wisata Bahari Lamongan. The pesantren has a number of schools including SMK Muhammadiyah 8, a vocational school based in Kandang Semangkon. Other schools under Karang Asem management are Madrasah Tsanawiyah Muhammadiah Junior High School and Madrasah Aliah Muhammadiah. As an Islamic institution, Karang Asem applies a strict Islamic rule to its students, like male students forbidden to meet females. Those who break the rule will be punished severely and will be sent home with no excuse.

Although many of its students come from local villages (such as Blimbing, Sedayu, and Brondong), some other students are from big cities like Jakarta and Surabaya. A boarding house or pondok is available for them. The santri -- a nickname to refer to Islamic boarding school students -- stay and eat in the pondok and can only go home unless it is school holiday. Ustadz[1] teach them holy Qur'an and Hadith. Male and female students stay in different pondoks.
