October 28 1939 marked the sinking of a dutch ship, Van Der Wijck, in the Java Sea, exactly in the village of Brondong, East Java. The ship was on its way to Kalimamtan when water started penetrating the ship body . Local fishermen -- those from Brondong, Jompong, Blimbing and Dengok -- helped rescue the crew and passengers in the ship using their skiffs and boats called Jonjon and Perahu. Many were drowned; some survived.
To appreciate the fishermen's help in evacuating the Van Der Wijck victims, the Dutch goverment built a monument in front of Brondong Fisheries Port Office, which is about 3 kilometres from Wisata Bahari Lamongan. The monument can still be seen until now (picture above).
Van Der Wijck was made in Roterdam, Netherland, in 1921 and owned by the Amsterdam's Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij company.
