Muhammadiyah is the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia -- after Nahdhatul Ulama -- with 29 million members. Led by Prof. Dr. HM Din Syamsuddin, Muhammadiyah puts a lot of concerns about the practice of synchretism in Indonesia. Synchretism is considered as a proof of shirk or idolatry.
Muhammadiyah emphasizes the authority of the Qur'an and the Hadiths as supreme Islamic law that serves as the legitimite basis of the interpretation of religious belief and practice. In 1925, or two years after the death of Ahmad Dahlan, the organization only had 4,000 members.
In my kampong Blimbing, the organization dominates the village and has a big number of members but no mosques declare to be the mosques of Muhammadiyah. The fanaticism isn't as great as those of Nahdhatul Ulama members in Dengok, a neighboring village. A lot of mosques in Dengok dare to claim as the mosques for NU members and as the place to do the practices of NU rituals such as tahlilan (saying La ilaha illallah with the crowds) and diba'an (playing islamic music, usually with traditional drums, and singing songs like shalawat).
Muhammadiyah is supported by several autonomous organizations such as:
Aisyiyah (Women)
Pemuda Muhammadiyah (Youth)
Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (Young women)
Ikatan Remaja Muhammadiyah (A teenager group)
Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (College students)
Tapak Suci Putra Muhammadiyah (Pencak silat)
Hizbul Wathan (Scouting)
